When should you come for acupuncture during the menstrual cycle?
You can come for acupuncture at any time in your cycle. However, during the days of the bleed there are some points I tend to avoid because I don't want to increase the bleeding.
Frequency of acupuncture treatment
For fertility issues, we like to see people over the course of 3 months. During this time, a combination of acupuncture and tweaks to lifestyle and eating are usually sufficient to begin to address the issue.
For general menstrual issues, several sessions, ideally spaced a week apart is recommended, with a decrease to once every two weeks or month thereafter where necessary.
It is recommended to come for acupuncture every week, however, this is often not affordable. In this case, once a fortnight is a good frequency. I offer packages of 4 follow-up treatments priced at £55 per session to make regular treatment more affordable.
Ovulation
If you know that you are having issues with ovulation then ideally come the week prior to ovulation and at ovulation.
PMDD and PMS
If your issues relate more to PMDD and PMS then it is preferable to see you at ovulation and prior to the period.
When i first started in private practice, acupuncture really surprised me in it's ability to regulate the menstrual cycle. This is very noticeable in women who get painful pre-menstrual headaches who often get relief quickly.
Pre Menstrual Dysphoria is another condition that I love supporting women with. It's not spoken about much which is surprising given it is such a debilitating condition. It has the ability to make 2 weeks of every month unbearable for women. In this case, it's useful to see women at least twice a month for a few months and after that it is usually fine to drop down to once a month for maintenance.
